In 1964 the U.S. Wilderness Act designated the West Elks as one of Colorado’s five original wilderness areas. It’s the state’s fifth largest encompassing over 176,000 acres and ranging in elevation from the 7,500 foot sagebrush covered foothills, to the 13,085 foot alpine summit of West Elk Peak. The main focal point of the area is the extraordinary turrets and pinnacles of the Castles, a stunning 12,079 foot volcanic rock formation jutting from the floor of the Valley of the Castles. Tenderfoot Outfitters is your connection to this special place.

Wilderness TowerIn days past, any type of activity in the back country was done by packers and strings of horses, the only way to access these isolated locations. Today, things have
changed a great deal, but the horse and reliable pack
string still plays a significant role to pack campers, nature lovers, fishermen, and hunters into what is left of these secluded areas. A trail ride or pack trip is one of the most memorable experiences available, but, if horses aren’t your thing, we also offer guided hiking excursions and backpacking trips into the magnificent West Elk Wilderness.

These first-class adventures are lead by highly skilled and friendly guides, who are happy to share their knowledge of the area as you travel the trails.
