In 1964 the U.S. Wilderness Act designated the West Elks as one of Colorado's five original wilderness areas. It encompasses over 176,000 acres, and ranges in elevation from 7,500 feet to the 13,085 foot summit of West Elk Peak. The West Elks are Colorado's fifth largest wilderness area, with the main focal point being the extraordinary turrets and pinnacles of the Castles, an amazing volcanic rock formation located in the Valley of the Castles.
